The satellite tv industry has made hugegains on the cable tv industry in the past several years. Withthe price of cable tv skyrocketing every year, many cablesubscribers are making the switch over to satellite tv. Okay soyou've decided to switch to satellite tv; but which satellite tvprovider do you choose? A satellite tv provider is a companythat owns and operates satellites in geostationary orbit aroundthe earth. These satellites broadcast the satellite signal downto your satellite dish and from their the signal is transferredto your receiver (black box). The two largest satellite tvproviders in the United Sates are and DISH Network. Thevast majority of satellite tv subscribers in the United Statesuse one or the other so this article will concentrate oncomparing the two satellite giants in an attempt to help youdecide which of the two is best foryou.

With the almost exponential growth of the satellite tvindustry, both DISH Network and are now in a positionwhere they can afford to offer the satellite equipment (dish andreceivers) free to their subscribers. So for starters bothDISH Network and offer free satellite equiipment.Basically the only qualifiers are that you be a first timesubscriber and that you have a credit card for monthly billingpurposes. So if the equipment is free how do the two providersmake any money? Well, you do have to pay for the monthlyprogramming of course. The price of your monthly programmingbill depends on which programming package you choose.

DISH Network's America Top 60 programmng package starts at$24.99 per month and local channels are available. DISH Networkpresently is not making new subscribers commit to a one yearcontract. You can end your subscription at any time with nofinancial penalty to pay. DirecTV's entry level programmingpackage is called the Total Choice package and comes with localchannels and is $39.99 per month. With the Total Choice packageyou get over 130 channels. does require you to sign aone year subscription agreement. If you cancel your servicebefore the year is up, then you have to pay a penalty fee toDirecTV.

As both satellite giants use the very lates technology in theirsatellites and receiving equipment, what differentiates the twois in the programming options that they provide to theirsubscribers. I would rate somewhat ahead of the DISHNetwork

in their sports packages, as they offer seasonal sportsoptions like the N.F.L. Sunday Ticket that has exclusiverights to. Both providers offer tons of premium movie packagesto choose from including HBO, Showtime, Starz and Cinemax. Allthese come with multiple channels per movie package. As DISHNetwork has more satellites in orbit than does they havethe capacity to offer up to 500 viewing channels, whereas withDirecTV, you can 'only' get 250 channels. Also, DISH Networkoffers alot more foreign programming packages than does.

Both DISH Network and offer 100% digital picture andCD quality sound in all of their programming. So again, theyare tied in this important quality. This technology allows for acrystal clear perfect picture that cable tv simply cannotprovide.

DISH Network, a subsidiary of EchoStar Communications, wasfounded in 1996 by Charles Ergan. While not quite as old asDirecTV, DISH Network was the fastest satellite provider toreach the 100,000 subscriber level doing so in just four shortmonths. Presently, DISH Network has over Nine million satellitetv subscribers in the 50 United States and District of Columbia.DISH Network has many 'firsts' to its credit, including beingthe first company to offer a satellite tv reciever that had abuilt in DVR (digital video recorder).

was begun in 1994 and is the largest satellite tvprovider in the United States. When it first launched in 1994,Direct TV was the first satellite TV company to offer alldigital-quality, multi-channel TV programming through the use ofdirect broadcast satellite (DBS) technology. DBS technology isnow the standard for the satellite tv industry and we have theingenuity of the engineers to thank for it. WhileDirecTV does not have as large a bandwidth allocation as theDISH Network does, to counter this has arranged to haveto exclusive deals with programming companies to cater to theprogramming whims of their subscribers.

In the all important area of customer care, both andDISH Network offer outstanding customer care and support. Bothoffer online Faqs sections and help sections to their websites. You can also call both toll free to get help with any problemyou may be having. Pay-Per-View movies may be ordered either byusing your remote control or calling the 800 toll free numberfor either provider.

Both and DISH Network offer free professionalinstallation as part of their free satellite tv promotions. One difference is that will install your equipment forfree in up to five rooms, where DISH Network presently onlyinstalls for free in up to four rooms of your home.
