Two Enter Internet Battle By James Junior, Thu Dec 8th
Consumers understand that when there is more competition in amarket, there are lower prices. This is especially true in thecomputer industry where it is reported that 68% of householdshave a computer. According to the Computer Industry Almanac, theworldwide number of Internet users will exceed 1 billion thisyear with the United States leading with over 185 million users. The number of users will continue to increase as well ascompetitors, forcing companies to offer faster connections at acheaper price. Two technologies that will lend a hand inallowing new players into the Broadband market are BPL andWIMAX. Broadband Over Power Lines, BPL BPL is a technology that allows Internet data to be transmittedover utility power lines and is also referred to as Power-lineCommunications or PLC. The technology works by modulatinghigh-frequency radio waves with the digital signals from theInternet. These radio waves are fed into the utility grid atspecific points, then travel along the wires and pass throughthe utility transformers into homes and businesses. One mainconcern by officials in the National Telecommunications andInformation Administration (NTIA) and the Federal EmergencyManagement Administration (FEMA), is that BPL will interferewith radio systems including fire, police, short-wave and landmobile. There are other groups who are taking the initiative inrealizing this potential including the IEEE which has begun todevelop IEEE P1675, "Standard for Broadband over Power LineHardware." This technology has gained national attention withreports by the Wall Street Journal that industry powerhousesGoogle and Goldman Sachs have invested nearly $100 million intoCurrent Communications Group, a company that provides high-speedInternet access over electrical power lines. According toReuters, CCG will use the financing to deploy voice, video anddata services in domestic and global markets. IBM is alsocurrently researching the use of
electrical power lines toprovide internet access by opening a BPL center in Houston withCenterPoint Energy although IBM has declined to put a dollarvalue on the amount invested.
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, WIMAX WiMAX, also known as IEEE 802.16, is a standards-based wirelesstechnology that provides broadband connections over longdistances and is intended for wireless “metropolitan areanetworks". It can be used for wireless networking in much thesame way WiFi is used today while also allowing for moreefficient bandwidth use and interference avoidance. WiMAX has abroadband wireless access range of 30 miles compared to only 100– 300 feet for a WiFi wireless local area network. WiMAX can beused for a number of applications, including "last mile"broadband connections, hotspots, and high-speed connectivity forbusinesses. Alvarion, a global organization headquartered inIsrael that supplies integrated Broadband Wireless Access (BWA)solutions, has announced it will supply satellite providerDirecTV Group Inc. with equipment that uses WIMAX technology inorder to enhance customer upstream bandwidth requirements. Byimplementing “last mile” broadband connections, wouldthen be able to supply faster connections to rural areas whereit would cost millions to lay down the cable lines necessary forhigh speed. Another application under consideration is gaming.Microsoft is looking to make WiMax a standard feature in itsXbox 360. This would allow gamers with similar equipment tointeract with other players without any internet access. All thefuncionality of WiFi with improved range and reduced networklatency makes WiMAX a very attractive alternative.
